Coming off of our busiest week ever (by more than than 30%)...our busiest month ever... and our busiest year ever, there's not much more I can say other than 'Thank You' to our loyal customers and our fantastic staff.

As we work to fulfill everyones orders from the end of 2011, we are already planning big things for 2012. Coming soon we will be introducing the Baltimore market to Tom Davies and his wonderful concept of "Made to Measure" eyewear. If I had a quarter for every time I've heard "I wish this frame came one size smaller" or "I wish it came in this color" or "I wish this frame was semi-rimless"... well I'd have a whole bunch of quarters.

(Yeah... a little overly dramatic, but we sell eyeglasses here - there's not much drama in our line of work. So don't rain on our parade.) We will be open today (Friday) 10-6 and tomorrow (Saturday) 10-5. Even if there's a small amount remaining on your account we can probably figure out a way to help you. We're like the MacGyver of flex spending...besides who wants some nameless, faceless corporation keeping your money? That's what government is for. If you're like me and think it's not really a holiday unless you increase the level of difficulty by waiting until the very last minute to begin your gift shopping then this drink's for you. In the original poem from 1823- when Rudy was just a youngster- the original name was Blixem. Really, you can google it. Designed by Patrick Hoet and Serge Bracke, this is worth the selection alone for the comedy that is listening to me try to pronounce "Soixante". Really guys? you couldn't stick with something like frame # 6 or something so simpletons (meaning me) could seem less unsophisticated? (Check out that alliteration. Not bad for someone with a room temperature IQ.)

In any event, even a dullard (yes, me again) can appreciate the beauty of this green/yellow and orange tiger stripe cat-eye frame. Don't worry, our resident cat-eye expert, Cailin, has been kept at arms length as to prevent her from drooling on or absconding with the frame. But hurry- myself and Rudy are old and are prone to bribery with baked goods. Claim it today before we cave in.

Every now and then (and by that we mean EVERY week) we get emailed pics of various celebrities (or pseudo-celebrities) wearing a designers eyeglasses or sunglasses... like the "Hayes" from Mosley Tribes worn first by Demi Moore (above)... and later by her reportedly soon to be ex-husband Ashton Kutcher (below). Interesting... could the reason Demi is dumping him because he "borrows" her fashion accessories? I wonder who gets "Hayes" in the divorce agreement? We were pleased to be visited by my good friend (and depressed Steelers fan- ha ha) Steven Spandau last week. Fortunately despite his questionable taste in football teams (how does someone from Brooklyn become a Steelers fan anyway?) he has exquisite taste in eyewear. He brought with him the brand new Fall 2011 collections for both J.F. Rey and BOZ. Always a favorite around these parts, (I think Cailin drooled on at least 3 models) I'd go out on a limb and say that this release from this French design house could be the best to date. We have a lot to show you in stock...check out our facebook pages in the coming weeks for more, but one of the models that we all loved is the Oasis. In 4 unbelievable color combinations and with exquisite detailing on the temples these are like little works of art. We currently have all of the color options in stock...but that won't last long. Frame O' The Day: DILEM Model: OF

Those of you who were paying attention remember when we introduced you to the French collection Dilem. Oh? You mean nobody was paying attention? Welcome to my childhood (Hi Mom and Dad, I'm just kidding I swear)... anyway, back to Dilem. Each model comes with 2 sets of interchangeable temples (your choice) and the ability to purchase more if you desire...

As you can see in the pictures, you can mix and match to go with any outfit or mood or even wear unmatched temples to show how much of a rebel you are. Kind of like how I wear mis-matched socks on occasion. But that was kind of an accident. And it was dark. And I might have had a drink...or four.

Moving on... we currently have the tortoise and crystal gray models in stock, but as you can see above the OF comes in 6 colors and we can special order anything that you want...if you're nice and pay attention, and don't laugh at my socks (at least not out loud).

Please accept our apologies in not posting for bit. When we were not dodging rain drops, or waiting out hurricanes or surviving earthquakes we were actually busy having our best summer ever. The good news is that we sold a ton of product... which can only mean one thing...we had to replace all of it with even MORE product... This Fall season might be the largest collection of new models that we've ever presented at one time. Quite honestly there's not even enough room to store much less display it all...so I guess we'll have to sell some. (what a concept). I took a bunch of (my trademark poor quality) photos to try and give everyone an idea of what's in stock now...but it's just the tip of the iceberg. (insert requisite Titanic joke here). Fall Preview: Tom Ford

It's almost Fall. I know, it's 100 degrees and the thought of bending over to tie your shoes makes you break out in a sweat. (Why do you think I wear slip ons?)
But seriously, (and when it comes to this blog I'm always serious. Or something. Maybe seriously annoying but why quibble?) it's just a matter of weeks until back to school, football and cooler temperatures.
Of course this means that we are starting to see new cool arrivals already making their way into the shop... kind of like how Christmas decorations show up in stores before Halloween is even over...I'll try and keep up with all the stuff we get, but it's going to be a lot. I have a problem...I like beautiful product and I buy a ton of it. Look for me on a future episode of the show "Hoarders" sometime in the future.
The first of these arrivals are from American designer Tom Ford. AKA the man who saved Gucci. Vintage inspired and crafted in Italy... great neutral, wearable colors and flattering shapes...these won't last long. I'll be back with more later.

Frame O' the Day: Zanotti Fragonara LIMITED EDITION

Welcome to the scorching hot edition of Frame O'the Day. Why did we chose this frame you ask? (ok I realize nobody asked...just play along, thanks)... well this beautiful, handmade, limited edition frame was created in Italy by our newest and bestest facebook friend... Simone Zanotti Fragonara. (well actually we had to beg for him to accept our friendship...and promise to spell his name right...hmm does Zanotti have 1 N and 2 T's or vice versa?)

Anyway...as you can see below this frame had a limited run of only 300 copies and we have the unofficial "James Bond" Edition #007. Unofficial only because I made that part up. But feel free to say the words "Bond, James Bond" to yourself over and over..I know I will. As usual the standard caveat applies... hurry up and check out it out as we only have 1...and yadda yadda yadda. Frame O' the Day: Davis from 141 Eyewear

I have a big head. No...not like a big ego, like literally a big head. Huge actually. I tell people it's because I have a big brain but I actually believe it's more because I have a big appetite. There's a better chance my head is full of mashed potatoes than brain matter but I'd never admit it to anyone. Well I guess I just did...but nobody reads this anyway. Except for my mom and she knows what a mental midget I am. (Maybe I was adopted.) Anyway those of us with large craniums have a hard time finding fashionable frames to cram our heads into. Every once in a while, however, the eyewear gods throw us a bone and a cool frame is produced that we can actually wear in public without fear of ridicule. I'd like to introduce you to "Davis" from 141 Eyewear...pictured above in "Black and Tan". (I love that color name, makes me want to have a beer.)

141 Eyewear is that cool company that donates a pair of eyeglasses for every one that they sell and I'll do an entire post showing the rest of the collection in the near future. (We ordered the entire product line). For now however it's all about Davis which comes in 2 other colors... "Noir" pictured above which is a really cool matte black finish on the front and polished black on the inside and "Wood" pictured below is a beautiful simulated wood grain finish. All their frames are handmade from the finest acetate with 5 barrel pin hinges and are extremely well made. But most important is that they fit. Stop in and get one before the rest of the big headed Baltimorians (or in my case "Baltimorons") do it first.

Unlike the rest of us, in this case it's crazy in a good way. The frame is handmade acetate and can be worn by a man or a woman. (I know, crazy right?)...and also like crazy it comes in several variations...in this case crystal gray with orange, tortoise with green and black with red. Welcome to the Christmas Eve edition of "Frame O' the Day". Why Christmas Eve? Well why not? Besides I have nothing to do until Trader Joes opens and I can go buy our Christmas party food for the store today. YES...we are open 10-6...and YES there will be free food for everyone. (Well until we eat it all, and with myself and Rudy in attendance it will probably go fast.) So anyway, back to the frame... the "Chateauneuf" from Bevel. Why is it the frame of the day you ask? Well it's RED (vintage red officially)...and since it is Christmas isn't RED like festive or something? That and I wanted to type "Chateauneuf" as many times as possible. Well that and it's also wine and I look forward to drinking LOTS of it over the next few days that I spend with my lovely family. And when I say lovely in no way do I mean annoying or smothering. Really.

Starting today we will start our soon to be famous "Frame O' the Day" feature here at Paris West Optical. Now don't get too excited... there's not going to be a frame for EVERY day. Or every other day... or any other days for that matter. I suffer from ADD and quite honestly I'll probably forget all about this by lunchtime... anyway... what was I saying again? We are happy to announce that we have won the 2010 Baltimore City Paper Readers Poll for "Best Eyewear Store". (Not to be confused with that other award we won earlier this year or the ones from last year...or the year before that...or...well, you get the idea)...A big Thank You to the readers of City Paper, our staff,our loyal customers and yes you Mom for all of your votes. We feel it's kind of fitting that we also have received the new vintage reissue collection from the old school American company, Victory Optical. Being modeled above by our new apprentice Cailin... along with the just plain old Rudy-Poo.
These models are EXACT replicas from the original Victory collection that were so popular decades ago... my Grandfather even had a pair... and he was cool...really, don't ask what happened to me, I guess I was the apple that fell off the tree....and rolled down the hill...and got ran over by the milk truck.
Anyway, each frame comes with a soft case/cleaning cloth, a hard case and a matching acetate keychain. They are very attractively priced and well made... stop in and see for yourself.

We hope every one had a great 4th of July weekend. I actually was lucky enough to visit the family friendly city of Las Vegas... where it was a cool 100 degrees plus every day. Ok, it is 100 degrees plus in Charm City as I type this so I guess that's not so impressive.
Speaking of hot, one trend I noticed over and over in Vegas (besides lots of short skirts, ample supplies of silicone, and lots of blond hair dye...wait, what was I saying again?)... oh yeah... the dominant eyewear trend in Sin City was the re-issued/re-imagined aviator shades from Carrera. Of course it didn't hurt that my room mate and travel companion wore his wherever we went. (Yes... he did get them from us.)
We currently have a good selection of these in the store, but they are going fast... stop in and claim yours today.

We are proud to announce we are the FIRST optical shop in Maryland to offer this innovative and colorful collection. (I'm sure our one of our uninspired, copycat competitors will follow suit eventually... but for now we're the only one...)
What makes this collection so unique you ask? Besides the great shapes, superior quality and vivid colors? Oh.... well how about the fact that the temples are completely interchangeable? Wearing a red dress? (like me on a Saturday night...oh wait...did I say that out loud?)...anyway...you can add red temples to match. Need to tone down for a job interview... switch those red temples out for basic black. There are countless options of various thickness, color and even funky patterns. Each pair of Dilem comes with 2 sets of temples to start with and you can order as many as you want...whenever you want. Nothing says welcome back from vacation like a huge stack of new product waiting when you return. And I'm happy(?) to say I was not disappointed when I strolled in to the shop yesterday. I've begun the unpacking process and have posted some pics of new Salt, Paolo Seminara, and Nouvelle Vague on our facebook page. The new L.A. Eyeworks from earlier updates are also now in stock.

One new collection that's on its way is the sunglass collection from Jee Vice. Pictured above is the model worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the new "Sex and the City" movie.
Jee Vice is known for their bold colors and non conventional shapes...and the ones we have coming in are no exception.
The gold sparkle on this model is even better looking in person.

We were happy to welcome Louis from L.A. Eyeworks back to our shop yesterday. We were unable to see him at Vision Expo in New York and were excited to see all the new spring releases. (I was so excited I dressed up in pastel pink and blue and looked like an easter egg...I even had a tie on). I'm happy to say it was well worth it, well maybe not for Louis who laughed at me, but for the rest of us we were very impressed by what he showed us.
One of my favorites which I kept calling "Cloud" is actually "Cotton" (don't ask...I'm old)...it's pictured above in matte black, honey brown, and chocolate brown/lavender. It's also pictured above on Kendall in a crystal turquoise. Call it whatever you want (I know I will), but it's a beautiful frame regardless.
Next up is "Rambler"... which I think was named after me and these meandering posts of mine. Pictured above in faux matte black wood, and two tone brown/grey.
This is "Masonette" which we ordered in the matte tokyo tortoise... I love tokyo tortoise and it's even cooler in matte finish.

Every Frame is made from 100 % recycled materials and with every purchase they'll plant a tree. (Note I said THEY will plant a tree... the only thing I can plant is myself in front of a TV set.) These are also rather reasonably price... so everybody wins.

Also arriving are some pretty cool new offerings from the Danes at Pro Design....

This weekend is the International Vision Expo in NYC. We (almost all of us) will be blazing a trail (taking a bus) up to the Big Apple Saturday night for a mad dash through the Jacob Javitz center on Sunday in attempt to find the latest and greatest in eyewear for 2010. We will be closing an hour early this Saturday @ 4pm and resuming regular hours the following week beginning Tuesday the 23rd @ 10am. Don't worry we'll post pics both here and on facebook with some glimpses of what's to come.

Paolo Seminara Limited Edition

Ok..I guess it's time to actually post something eyeglasses related...since it IS February and we've already had 3 snow related posts and none about eyewear. Thankfully right before the latest blizzard we did receive some limited edition Paolo Seminara specs from Italy. The first is "Achille" serial numbered 1 of 250. That's right only 250 exist and this is numero UNO. And as the Saints (and the formerly known as Baltimore Colts) know...# 1 is way better than #2.
Next we have the "Abel", serial numbered 11 of 250.
Finally we did receive "Aric" which is not serial numbered, but is still limited...seeing as we only have one in stock. Cool color scheme in black and red...maybe a good Valentines day gift...or you could always give rock salt and a shovel. 10 days until pitchers and catchers report...stay warm everyone.

Cujo

My apologies for a lack of updates thus far in the new year. As some long time customers may remember I used to bring my dog "Cujo" into the old store on a regular basis. Sadly Cujo lost his battle with heart disease a little over a week ago and we all had to say goodbye to him. For those who don't know his story, I referred to Cujo as the worlds most expensive free dog. (and the expression "so ugly he's cute" seemed to be created for him. I personally always thought he looked like the illegitimate love child of Brittany Spears and Cookie Monster). I found him (or he found me depending who you ask) when he ran in front of my car in a downpour back in November of 1999. Smelly, filthy and covered in fleas he looked like a large wet rat... and I wasn't too enthusiastic when my then girlfriend suggested that "I needed a puppy" and that I should give him a home. Fortunately for him and me, he was a happy and friendly dog who grew on me immediately. It turns out he was a runt, that probably was kicked out of the litter and managed to survive on the streets. Until I almost ran him over that night I have no idea what he did to eat.

Here's a picture of him with my brothers Rottweiler "Rocky" who he had fight with the first time they met which required 11 stitches...they did become good friends thereafter and I swear Rocky was a little scared of him after that.
Cujo was a shih-tzu runt who weighed less than 5 lbs and had a variety of ailments including strabismus (an eye muscle imbalance that makes the eyes turn outward), a little water on the brain, a huge tongue that didn't fit in his mouth, gum disease (which resulted in the loss/removal of half his teeth) and of course the heart disease that lead to a massive heart attack back in April of 2006. (that's when he stopped coming to work with me)
After the heart attack Cujo required liquid medications (he refused to take pills) that he needed twice a day (and made him pee every 5 minutes)... but he rebounded nicely and was back to his normal self in days and even survived an incompetent groomer cutting off a chunk of his tongue about 2 years ago.(you can see it in the first picture) As a longtime pet owner I can honestly say that pound for pound I've never seen a dog with more character, personality or toughness. He will be missed by all of us, including my cats, Kendall, and my Mom who referred to him as her special "grandchild". Thank you to all our customers who have sent condolences and well wishes. In closing, I don't want to preach but for anybody thinking about getting a pet I'd seriously recommend adopting or rescuing an animal from the SPCA, the Humane Society, or another shelter...just tell them Cujo sent you. I'll miss you buddy.

Richeles' New Specs

Just when I thought the only people reading this blog were my Mom, Kendalls' Grandmom, and random perverts looking for that Paris Hilton video comes proof that on occasion someone else out there is actually paying attention. Back in the spring we featured the super cool/ neo-retro frame from French design house Traction Productions (pictured above)..... well we are happy to say we've found it a good home.

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of meeting Richele, who rumor has it was admiring the "Pistel" frame from a far. (A far meaning via the internets). When she finally made it in she was concerned that we may have sold it. As luck would have it, the customer who had put it on layaway (yes we DO layaway) had changed her mind and the frame was back on the market. As you can see it didn't stay on the market as Richele claimed it for herself. Yes...it does look fabulous on her.

Of course while she was here we couldn't help from giving Richele other options to select from... and then we pulled this brand new THEO frame from the new arrival section...yep... we had to break out the 2 pair special because these looked just as great.

I just want to say THANK YOU to Richele for stopping in and then for being so gracious to take and send in pictures for us to post. (I'm sure she saw my lack of photography skills and decided to take matters into her own hands...not that I blame her.) Happy Holidays Richele from all of us here at Paris West.

New Arrival: Volte Face

I think back about 100 years ago I posted that we were getting the French collection : Volte Face. Well... I have a confession to make. We got them. 2 months ago. I'm just a slacker...and getting our resident super model to pose for a decent picture nowadays is as easy as getting Rush Limbaugh to say someting nice about Barack Obama. So in order to expedite the process I gave Miss K. complete artistic control over the images we use on the blog (this one at least). Above is the Volte Face model: "Matt" in Amber Tortoise. I'm not sure who "Matt" is exactly but I think Kendall really captures his essence in the photo.
Here are the 3 color options that "Matt" comes in... note the stained glass effect on the temples.
Speaking of stained glass... here are models: "Nara" and "Dita" with 100% titanium fronts and hand carved temples filled with acetate.
Rounding out the collection we have "Cary", "Maje" and "Knit"... check out the interlocking acetate temples on "Knit" -extremely unique. As far posting goes, I promise to make more of an attempt to do so more frequently... but for now I need to go...Kendall is demanding chocolate milk and threatening to walk off the set. The fine folks at Volte Face should design a frame for her... and name it "Diva".

I apologize to those who were wondering why there were less updates on the blog recently...I know many of you (Kendalls grandmom) were eager to see all of the latest eyewear news (Pictures of Kendall) and I am sorry I disappointed you all. (all 1 of you). Yes...I AM a slacker...or as Kendall would say....a "sqwacker"... In any event here is some late breaking optical news...(with pictures of Kendall included)... We were happy to host Amy from Bevel a few weeks back (and force her to pose for pictures) while she showed us all of the cool Fall arrivals from one of our favorite design houses.

July 4th Weekend Hours

Yes...it's that time again. Time to eat too much...drink too much...and then play with explosives. Our hours for the rest of the week are as follows:

Today (Thursday): 10-6

Friday July 3rd: 10-6 Dr. Larry IS IN and appointments are available.

Saturday July 4th: CLOSED (duh)

Sunday July 5th: CLOSED

Monday July 6th: CLOSED (like every other Monday)

Tuesday July 7th: 10-6

When you think of high-end frames usually France, Japan, Italy, Denmark or Germany are the usual suspects that come to mind as far as where they are manufactured. Not in this case...Playing the role of Keyser Soze we have newcomer Etnia Barcelona from Spain. Who is Etnia Barcelona? How the heck do I know... I had to watch "The Usual Suspects" like 30 times before I figured who Keyser Soze actually was. (I'm slow like that)...anyway Etnia features reasonably priced acetate and combination frames in vibrant beautiful colors. Above we have Aubrey in the Tel-Aviv in Brown/Turquoise.
A trademark style for the collection, the Noosa in Black/Grey Chess (or checkers for simpletons like me.)
